Many of the wireless technologies today have two options, longer range and large bandwidth such as cellular technologies, or limited bandwidth with short range like Bluetooth. However, most applications in IoT need limited bandwidth but longer battery life and range. So applications requiring low data rate but longer range had to compromise on some of the specifications. With the introduction of LoRa, customers can satisfy both these requirements along with lower power consumptions, higher security and lower cost.

LoRa technology offers longer application range around 10 miles, substantially more than cellular networks. However, the most attractive advantage of LoRa is its power consumption. It enables devices to operate on a battery for years. The data rate offered by LoRa is around 290-50kbps, making LoRa technology ideal for monitoring and metering applications where a small amount of data is transferred over longer range. Additionally, LoRa technology is secured with AES128 encryption standard maintaining the confidentiality of the data being transmitted.

LoRa technology uses the 868MHz frequency band in Europe and the 915MHz band in North America. This standardization of LoRa will help establish interoperability between different LoRa networks.

LoRaWAN technology is ideal for monitoring and metering applications. It can be used in Smart city applications for parking and security such as fire alarms. It is also suitable for building management applications such as heating controls, lighting and other utilities. But the most interesting application is Smart agriculture where LoRa can be used for Livestock management.
