Video: Symmetry Electronics Sits Down with Tom Nordman of Bluegiga Technologies

Tom Nordman, Vice President of Sales at Bluegiga Technologies, recently visited Symmetry's headquarters all the way from Finland. Symmetry Marketing Manager Stephan Buba sat down with Tom to discuss trends in the short-range wireless market.

Hi, my name is Stephan Buba, Marketing Manager at Symmetry Electronics. I’m talking today with Tom Nordman, VP of Sales at Bluegiga Technologies. How are you doing, Tom?

I’m doing great.

Tom, what trends do you see occurring in the short-range wireless market?

Tom Nordman

At the moment, the very strong trend in the short-range wireless market is that the Bluetooth Smart, low energy Bluetooth is highly taking space on different kinds of applications. New kinds of innovations around the cell phone industry are popping up here and there. Home automation applications, health and fitness, are growing very fast. Something that is very interesting in trends is that Apple has been very active in this space, they have released some time ago the iBeacon, that we also support, that you can have real-time location services for marketing or indoor positioning purposes. Another area where they are strong at the moment, marketing strongly at the moment, is the home automation systems, where also our Bluetooth Smart modules are bringing an excellent way of connecting, be it with cell phones and different kinds of sensors, or lighting systems, or ventilation systems, air conditioning. Of course the wireless audio is always a trend as it’s been with Bluetooth for many, many years.

How are Bluegiga’s products positioned to address these trends?

Tom Nordman

We have a number of different kinds of Bluetooth Smart modules, which is the Bluetooth Low Energy, that can run even years of lifetime with a coin cell battery, so we have engineered our product with high quality radio lengths so that you can have a pretty interesting range for cell phones or tablets plus the development environment that applications can be in to the module.

What can you tell me about the new Bluetooth Low Energy long range module from Bluegiga? 

Tom Nordman

So, that’s an interesting product. We’ve been known for a while in the market about the long range products and we also brought this knowledge we have from the radio frequency engineering to the Bluetooth Smart marketplace, so unlike any other competitor, we can go up to 200-400 meter range for the cell phone or tablet, which brings you a completely new landscape of applications that you can think of. Imagine that you can have a similar or higher range than in a wireless land with low energy applications. So we’re really excited about that module.

That is exciting. Do you have any closing thoughts? 

Tom Nordman

Through Bluegiga’s 14 year history, we’ve been building up the reputation in the marketplace about the high quality products but also excellent support.
