Historically, utility companies would use outdated dial-up modem technology that was both slow and expensive. There are a number of ways utility companies are incorporating LTE cellular connectivity for gas, water and electric metering and reading applications.
Using cellular routers for these types of field applications gives industrial utility companies the flexibility to cost-effectively place a network connection anywhere it is needed, providing high-speed and secure connectivity. Replacing traditional meters can be expensive and there is no economical way to remove a failed communications component and insert a new component. However, even the oldest meters have alternative connectivity options built into them such as a serial and/or Ethernet port.
