Nordic Semiconductor today announces that Creative Medical, a Shenzhen, China-based medical technology company, has selected Nordic’s nRF52810 Bluetooth® Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) System-on-Chip (SoC) to provide the processing power and wireless connectivity for its ‘PC-60F Fingertip Oximeter’.
The PC-60F is a Bluetooth LE fingertip pulse oximeter designed for use in hospitals, clinics, and at home, that uses propietary algorithms and non-invasive optics to accurately measure an individual’s current oxygen saturation (SpO2), pulse rate (PR), and perfusion index (PI). SpO2 is an important physiological parameter reflecting respiration and ventilation function, while PI is a measure of blood flow through the small vessels of the extremities of the body. Together the measurements provide medical practioners with key insights into the health status of patients with serious respiratory disease, those under anesthesia during operation, and premature babies, for example.
The nRF52810 SoC acts as the fingetip oximeter’s core microcontroller thanks to the SoC’s powerful 64MHz, 32-bit Arm® Cortex® M4 processor which enables SpO2 signal acquisition, SpO2 algorithm operation, and OLED display operation, as well as providing low latency Bluetooth LE wireless connectivity to an individual’s Bluetooth 4.0 (and later) smartphone or tablet. Creative Medical’s iOS- and Android-compatible partner app, ‘@Health’, immediately displays the SpO2, PR value, and other key health metrics, allowing the user to store and manage historial patient data.
The fingertip oximeter employs two AAA alkaline batteries to support up to 36 hours of continuous working time, thanks in part to the low power characteristics of the Nordic SoC, as well as the ability for the device to automatically power on/off when a patient’s finger is inserted and removed. The nRF52810 has been engineered to minimize power consumption with features such as the 2.4GHz radio’s 4.6mA peak RX/TX currents and a fully-automatic power management system that reduces power consumption by up to 80 percent compared with Nordic’s nRF51 Series SoCs.
Nordic’s nRF52810 multiprotocol SoC combines an 64MHz, 32-bit Arm Cortex M4 processor with a 2.4GHz multiprotocol radio (supporting Bluetooth 5, ANT™, and proprietary 2.4GHz RF protocol software) featuring reduced radio energy consumption, with 196kB Flash memory and 24kB RAM. The nRF52810 SoC is supplied with the latest version of Nordic’s S112 SoftDevice, Bluetooth 5-compliant RF protocol software.
